According to Jay King, a Celtic journalist who works for The Athletic, several sources in the league revealed that in order to continue to cut payroll, the Celtics have explored the expiration contract of $27.68 million for Anthony Simmons.
Jay King said that through this move, the team hopes to achieve two goals emphasized by President of Basketball Operations Stevens after the first round of the NBA Draft: Restore more flexibility in the roster and pave the way for free agents Cornett and Horford.
According to salary expert Yossi Gozlan, the Celtics reduced the luxury tax penalty by sending Holiday and Porzingis away, in exchange for Anthony Simmons and Nian, with nearly $210 million in value. So far, the Celtics have saved a total of $238 million, now below the second tyrant line of $4.5 million.
