Guardian: Qatar wants to host the 2029 Club World Cup, which may be held in winter

The Guardian reported that Qatar has expressed its intention to bid for the 2029 Club World Cup, which may change the event to winter. The media learned that the Qatar representative held talks with senior FIFA leaders during this event held in the United States, expressing his hope to host the next event in four years.

It is understood that Qatar promises to hold carbon neutral events, which is in sharp contrast to the current situation where the team needs to fly to 11 cities in the United States to participate. The nine stadiums built by Qatar for the 2022 World Cup are still in use, with six of them regularly hosting the Qatar Star League, and all venues can be put into use to reduce the cost of hosting games and reduce domestic commuting for fans.

Although the event plan may meet FIFA's needs, the extreme high temperatures in Qatar in summer will pose a major challenge, and it is almost inevitable that it will be held in winter like the 2022 World Cup, although the summer event was promised when it was originally bid. The United States also encountered high temperatures and extreme weather this summer. Chelsea's 1/8 final against Benfica was interrupted for two hours due to the thunderstorm in Charlotte, North Carolina. Blues coach Maresca angrily denounced the decision as "ridiculous".

Players from multiple clubs filed complaints about the conditions of this event, and the International Federation of Professional Football Players (FIFPro) will hold a press conference on Monday to respond to the relevant demands. It was revealed that December 2029 is regarded as the most likely time period for Qatar to host the game, but this will be strongly opposed by European leagues such as the Premier League because it will seriously interfere with the domestic season.

The European League Association has joined hands with FIFPro to file a lawsuit against FIFA over the "lack of negotiation procedures" of the Club World Cup. If the next game is settled in Qatar, the conflict will surely intensify. Although the date is not set, it is generally expected that the 2034 Saudi World Cup will also be held in the winter.

But potential participating clubs may take a different position, after all, the event bonus is tempting. This year's FIFA has provided a total bonus of US$1 billion. With more time to negotiate business cooperation, the bonus scale of the next session may be larger. Manchester City has won $51.7 million (£40 million) in advance to the quarterfinals, and will win another $74.1 million in the championship. The prize money for winning the finals alone reached US$40 million, and the total prize money of US$125 million in all seven games was only slightly lower than the income earned from UEFA after Paris Saint-Germain won the 17 Champions League games.

FIFA directly granted the hosting rights of the Club World Cup 2025 to the United States without the bidding process, but given the strong interest of all parties, it is expected that the official bidding process will be launched in the 2029 event. Qatar is the fourth country to make a public statement. Before jointly hosting the 2030 World Cup, Spain and Morocco expressed their hope to host it separately. In addition, after meeting with FIFA President Infantino in Miami last week, the Brazilian Football Association President also officially announced his bid for the 2029 Club World Cup.

FIFA declined to comment.
