UEFA official: Opposes domestic leagues to host games overseas and makes exceptions to approve La Liga Serie A overseas

UEFA issued an official statement reiterating its position of explicit opposition to the arrangement of domestic leagues of member countries to be held overseas.

Nevertheless, the UEFA Executive Committee finally "reluctantly" approved two overseas game requests from the Spanish and Italian Football Associations, emphasizing that this move is an "exceptional" behavior and will not become a precedent. The core reason for this seemingly contradictory decision is that there are loopholes in the current regulatory framework of FIFA and the rules are not clear and detailed enough. In its statement, UEFA pointed out that after consultations with fans, clubs, players and other leagues, it was confirmed that all walks of life generally do not support the hosting of overseas games. However, under the restrictions of existing FIFA rules, it is difficult for UEFA to reject the application directly.

UEFA President Cheferin made a tough statement in his statement: "League matches should be played on the ground", otherwise "deprived of loyal fans of the rights" and may "distort the game". He said that although he felt "regretted" about approving these two games, it does not mean that restrictions will be lifted in the future.

At the same time, UEFA promised to actively participate in and promote FIFA to revise relevant rules to ensure that the integrity of the domestic league can be effectively protected in the future, and emphasized that all 55 member associations have promised to communicate with UEFA before submitting similar applications in the future to jointly safeguard the overall interests of European football.
